The symptoms of hip arthritis

Arthritis is an inflammatory disease that can affect different organs. At least one hundred types are recognized, including that of the hip, which is defined as arthrosis, and affects the chronic cartilages in a chronic measure, with a secondary involvement in the bone, the synovium and the capsule. This disease affects the joints of the knee, the vertebrae and the hip in an undifferentiated manner, and is degenerative. It affects mainly the elderly and the female subjects, but in many cases a genetic matrix is recognized. In the same family we can see cases of osteoarthritis of the hip even for three successive generations. When we talk about osteoarthritis in the hip, we refer to a painful symptomatology that encompasses the entire structure of the joint, and which also reaches the heel. The initial symptoms are characterized by a strong inflammation and rigidity in the groin, painful and sudden pains to the entire thigh and in correspondence of the buttock already when you get up in the morning. The next phase distinguishes the appearance of pain in a course that includes three phases: a first phase of soreness on waking, a gradual decrease in the course of the day and its reappearance in the evening or in the case of a substantial engagement of the joint (for example gymnastics or a longer walk than usual). At this stage rest will be precious, in order to decrease the intensity of pain. The progression of the disease tends to gradually decrease gradually the mobility of the hip from the point of view of its classical movements: rotation, extension and flexion. For a person affected by osteoarthritis at the hip it becomes sometimes difficult to take a long step, spread the legs, cross them, climb or descend the stairs, and make movements with ease that until recently considered normal, such as connecting the shoes. When it is in a more advanced stage, it is possible to notice small bony growths, with the thickening of the synovium and in the most serious cases a total blockage of the joint. A decrease in the movements, and physical activity caused by the pain will cause the weakening of the musculature to support the hip, resulting in hypotono-hypotrophy of the gluteal muscles. The therapies to combat osteoarthritis at the hip are different and depend very much on the stage of the disease. In any case, limb functional limitation must be tackled quickly, to avoid limb degeneration leading to the need for an operation. Intense movement is generally discouraged, especially if the cartilage of the hip is thinned, which happens with the progression of the disease. A specialist can recommend good postural gymnastics that do not overload the joint, but "dissolve" it, through a gentle therapy that allows, where necessary, a correct decrease in body weight, which can help the hip. Osteopathic therapies are also recommended for minor osteoarthritis, which "reassign" the balance of the skeleton, also acting on the hip-femur complex, putting the affected joint in motion in the correct manner.
